Starting out as a Utah Photographer

A few months after my husband and I got married I got a text from a friend asking if they could pay me to do their family’s pictures that fall. I couldn’t believe it! Someone wanted to pay me to take their pictures. I was over the moon excited about it. As I prepared for the session I deeply considered becoming a Utah Photographer. I loved photography. It was my activity activity and favorite way to spend an afternoon. I’d always beg my friends to go on “shoots” or let me take their pictures. A few years back I had gotten my first DSLR and taught myself to shoot in manual mode. I just loved cameras and photography.

The weekend of the shoot I decided to buy Lightroom to professionally edit the images and decided to start a Facebook page for my photography business. In my mind, I was now a Utah Photographer (the Facebook page made me legit).

My First Shoot

I remember being SO nervous before the shoot. I showed up 20 minutes early and sat in my car, panicked. “Why did I agree to do this?” I thought to myself. I wasn’t a professional photographer – I was just a girl that loved to take pictures. It was terrifying. When the family pulled up I took a deep breath and got to work. We probably shot for 90 minutes which, looking back, is way too long for little kids, but what did I know? We trekked all around Wheeler Farm and I had a blast. I had NO idea what I was doing as far as posing and coaching, but I loved every minute of that session.

That night I went home and edited all the images. I was so proud of the work I had done and what I had created. I decided then that I was going to become a professional Utah Photographer. I was going to get better, build my business, and stay home with my family. This was the talent that God had given me to provide for my family. I was so excited.

My Cheerleaders

When I decided to pursue this business there were a few people that fully supported me and cheered me on. One of those families was the Neal family. They trusted me WAY before I should have been trusted and have had me shoot their family’s pictures, a wedding, and various other things. They have cheered me on and supported my photography business from day 1 and I love them and am grateful to them for that.

This past weekend we did some updated family pictures for them. I found a super cute spot in Provo near Utah Lake where the sun was beautiful and the leaves were turning. It was such a beautiful location and the Neals showed up with beautiful outfit choices. It was such a great shoot.
