Best Summer Locations for Family Photos in Utah

Best Summer Locations for Family Photos in Utah | Utah Family Photographer

A lot of people feel like the best or the only time to do their family pictures is in the fall. While I agree that the fall colors can be lovely, especially in the mountains, there are other great times to take family photos that won’t look as time sensitive as doing them in the fall. Summer is a great time to get your family photo updated for the year and provides a variety of different locations that you might not think to shoot at in the fall. Here are my Top 5 Best Summer Locations for Family Photos in Utah.

Albion Basin

Albion Basin is up Little Cottonwood Canyon at the Alta Ski Resort. It’s a great, mountain location that provides beautiful wild flowers in the middle of the summer. It’s a really popular spot of family photos in Utah because of the beautiful wild flowers and the breath taking mountain views. Plus, how cool is it that you can be on a ski run when it’s not ski season? It’s so neat. The hardest part about shooting at Albion is the lack of parking. There is guaranteed to be a lot of people up there, so just plan ahead to make sure you have a strategy when you get to the top of the canyon and you’ll be fine. This is my absolute favorite summer location.

White Barn in Park City

If you’ve ever been to Park City, chances are you’ve driven past the white barn. It’s a beautiful barn that is alone in a field on your way to Main Street in Park City. During the summer months (from Memorial Day to September 11th) the city hangs a huge American Flag on the barn. It’s a beautiful remembrance of the freedoms we are blessed within America and the perfect backdrop for summer family pictures in Utah. Plus, Park City tends to be a bit cooler than the temps in the valley, so it’s a perfect getaway from the heat.

Lush Green ANYTHING

Maybe it’s because I’m a photographer, but when I’m in the car, I’m constantly taking notes or looking at places that would a perfect location for photos. In Utah, we’re lucky to have so many. Lately I’ve been really loving lush green fields, trees, and bushes. Nothing, to me, says summer like the beautiful greens with some pretty bokeh in the shot. There are so many great places to choose, but don’t be shocked if we’re just on the side of the road somewhere. I am obsessed with GREEN.

Squaw Peak

If you’re wanting to stay in Utah County but love the idea of mountains with wild flowers, Squaw Peak is your go to. In Provo Canyon, this beautiful location provides stunning mountain views and beautiful yellow blooms in the summer months. It’s a great spot for large groups and smaller, more intimate families. A great bonus of shooting in Provo Canyon is how easy things are to get to. It’s such a quick drive into the canyon and up to the Squaw Peak trailhead.

City Carnivals and Fairs

Ah, is there anything better than a carnival or a fair? The lights, the ride, the sketchy food – it’s all an experience. That being said, carnivals and fairs provide really fun and unique backdrops for Family photos in Utah. They are colorful and have beautiful bokeh from the lights. Plus, you can have great lifestyle shots while enjoying cotton candy or riding a ride together. These are great options if you are looking for something unique and during the summer, there is almost always a carnival or fair going on. Carnivals really are one of the best Summer locations for family photos in Utah.
