Family pictures at the Bonneville Salt Flats are a truly cool experience. Not only is this a totally stunning and luminescent location that will complement your family beautifully, but is also one of the most unique natural wonders in Utah. The Salt Flats are a remnant of lake Bonneville. Long ago this ancient lake shrank down to what’s now the Great Salt Lake, and as it evaporated it left behind salt deposits. So, as you are taking your family pictures, you are literally standing on packed salt. How neat is that?

Where are the Bonneville Salt Flats?

The Salt Flats lay along 1-80 between Salt Lake City and Wendover, NV. They are two hours away from downtown Salt Lake City. Because of the distance, we do charge a $100 travel fee in addition to the standard $400 cost of a family photo shoot.

The best spot to shoot your family pictures is either the Bonneville Speedway or the Salt Flats rest area that’s about ten miles outside Wendover. We prefer the Salt Flats rest area because it’s easy to find, conveniently located just off the freeway, and there is more than adequate parking.

When is the best time of year to shoot Family Pictures?

The Salt Flats are flooded with a shallow pool of water during the first half of the year. This water comes from melting snow, and it usually evaporates by late summer. If you’d like a beautiful pool of water in the background of your family photos, schedule your shoot for winter or spring. If you’d like a dryer look, schedule your family photos for late summer or fall. Whatever season you book, expect your shoot to start either at sunrise or about one hour before sunset to capture the most striking light.
