Fall Family Photos in Utah’s Aspens | Peak Color on a Canyon Trail
Glowing golden aspens, evergreens, and a rocky mountain backdrop made this canyon trail feel like a storybook. These fall family photos in Utah’s aspens happened at the very peak of the color, and this family of six brought so much joy to every frame.

Catching Peak Aspen Color
Every fall I get the same question: when should we book? In Utah’s canyons the aspens turn fast, and peak color usually lasts only a week or two. Higher elevations change first, usually in late September, and lower trails can stay golden into October. This session landed in late October, right when the leaves were glowing and the light came through the trees soft and warm.
My tip: for fall family photos in the aspens, aim for late September through mid-October, keep your dates a little flexible, and plan for the last hour or two before sunset. The sun dips behind the canyon walls early, so the leaves glow and nobody ends up squinting.
The kids got the session off to the best start by running down the trail toward me with Mom and Dad close behind. That kind of energy is why I love lifestyle sessions. A little movement and some real laughter beat stiff poses every time.

A Few Minutes for Mom and Dad
I always save a little time for the parents. Trevor and his wife laughed at each other the whole time, arm in arm against the aspens. These are the photos parents say they never get, and they end up being some of their favorites in the gallery.

Four Siblings, Four Personalities
With four kids, from an older brother down to two little guys, I like to slow down and give each child a moment of their own. A cozy cream knit and headband, a maroon henley with hands tucked in pockets, and a confident big brother in green each said something different about who they are right now.

Then we brought the siblings back together for some group shots. Whether they’re best friends or still working on it, these images capture how they fit together this year.

What to Wear for Fall Family Photos in Warm Tones
This family nailed their outfits for golden aspens. Burgundy corduroy, olive green, cream knits, navy and black buffalo plaid, tan chinos, and denim all work with the yellow leaves instead of competing with them. A few tips for your own session:
- Pick two or three anchor colors, like burgundy, olive, and cream, then add neutrals.
- Mix textures like corduroy, knits, and plaid so the photos feel rich and cozy.
- Skip bright yellow and neon, since the aspens already bring plenty of gold.
- Wear comfy shoes you can walk a dirt trail in.
