Corona Virus has touched every aspect of our lives. Trips cancelled, school closed, restaurants forced to shut down, and the list goes on. It’s been a hard 2 weeks for our entire nation and we’ve been told it’s only going to get worse. The fear and anxiety surrounding each of us is almost audible as we walk through the grocery store full of empty shelves or as we walk across the sidewalk from neighbors we love to chat with, but have to keep our distance from. I don’t think I’m alone in saying these have been the scariest and hardest weeks of my life.
A photographer friend of mine shared some images she had taken of a family, on their porch during our time of social distancing and quarantine. I fell in love. I decided I wanted to shoot some porch sessions of families around me to document this historic time in our history. This was the first session I did, the Walker family. They are the sweetest and I adore them immensely. I kept a long distance as I shot and shot them through the window of their front room, and I fell in love.
Here are some thoughts Whitney had during this time:
“Have you seen the Pillsbury commercial? The one that states 37 minutes is the average amount of quality time a family gets together per day? That absolutely broke my heart and blew my mind when I heard it. Then as I evaluated our life and I realized we actually fit into that statistic. The demands of later work nights for dad, early bed times for baby, not to mention homework and activities for the littles gave us roughly those 37 minutes together as a family in a weeknight.
I’ll be the first to admit this quarantine has wrecked me emotionally, it’s caused me anxiety and fear..left me feeling lonely and uncertain of the unknown. But in all that emotion I’ve found peace in turning that 37 minutes into 3.7(+) hours of quality family time a day.
There is peace that comes in laughter filled family rooms and dance parties in the kitchen. There is peace and joy in making meals together, in teaching gods word, in reading stories, playing legos and painting a masterpiece. I feel at times I’m now living in the silver lining of life and I hope and pray that after this is all behind us I won’t have to revert back to the 37 fleeting minutes a day.”
